Family planning is such a hot topic today; sadly it is not openly discussed as it should. With economic problems biting hard there is no better time than now to limit the size of families. When we have a small family, we can easily take care of them and provide the very best for them. A family size that is manageable is always a happy one. Even more interesting is the fact that research has shown than couples can now preselect the sex of their next child. Today, you see families setting out to a boy (or girl) first and balancing it with the other one and everyone is happy. No one would tell you how they did it. Its not always a stroke of luck, especially when it looks too good to be true.

Types of family planning.

There are different types of family planning but they are grouped mainly as temporary and permanent, natural and artificial.

Temporary and Permanent Family Planning

Temporary is any one that’s reversible easily, permanent are not reversible. Most permanent ones are surgical or intrusive, such as a vasectomy (In Men), where the tube or pipes that carries sperm from the man’s scrotum, the sac that hangs under the penis, to the penis itself. The connection between them is cut off in a very quick surgery that is safe and lasts only about 15 minutes.

Same for the woman, she may have what is called tubal ligation, to cut the fallopian tubes where eggs pass through to meet sperm cells. Some call it tying of the tubes. These two are the most guaranteed and only methods that are 100percent assured. Together with abstinence, they are the only way you can absolutely prevent pregnancies. Every other type of family planning has a margin for human error.

Most times, in Africa, these two surgeries are not performed because they are permanent and irreversible and you cannot go back and say you changed your mind after it is done. Even doctors tend not to perform them on people who have less than 4-6 children.

Natural and Unnatural Family Planning

The Unnatural Method is the one involving the use of barriers such as a male condom, female condom, pills, injections, patches, implants, insertions etc.

Condoms have no side effects, except remembering to wear them or excusing yourself and asking your partner to hold on while you wear one can kill the mood which many argue is a very important factor.  Over time, if you are using the high quality condom (which can be slightly more costly), it could add up to a significant amount each month. You also have to remember to buy some and if you have young children, how to hide it is another factor.

Then pills, injectable, patches and insertions have side effects which no one would tell you completely. No woman should try these except you are above 45 and don’t intend to have any more children. While they may be effective, they also don’t offer 100% guarantee. The way these hormonal contraceptives work vary but generally they either make you infertile (while in use) or make the uterus a place that is too hostile for a pregnancy to stay. It is not that pregnancy doesn’t occur. You see, some of the contraceptives claim to lead to a slightly higher amount of menstrual bleeding each month but in reality what goes on is that pregnancy takes place normally but the uterus becomes a place where the pregnancy (fetus) cant attach itself safely to the uterine wall and so each month, the women using these type of contraceptives are actually having unsafe abortions or miscarriages to put mildly.

You go to your doctor complaining that your periods have become irregular and very heavy since you began using it. Doctor or healthcare provider says yes, it’s the FP tool, it happens like that, don’t worry. Well, that’s only half of the truth. What is really happening is that you are getting pregnant and the tool inside you is aborting it steadily and regularly. If only you know what repeated abortions do to a woman’s body… This is why after using them and when they are ready to have another baby, they can’t.

In other cases, they change the chemical composition of your body. They do this in different ways, depending on what type is used. Some increase the presence of certain hormones in your body to levels that make pregnancy impossible. Some increase your prolactin levels, and alter progesterone/estrogen balance so that you either stop ovulating completely or even stop menstruating. Sometimes breast milk begins to come out of your breast because they have sent a signal through the medicine that you are pregnant and so pregnancy can’t occur in an already pregnant woman. Unfortunately, chemical alterations are difficult to readjust and may take months or years if at all they come back. There have been claims of them leading to certain sicknesses in future but we wouldn’t want to mention that here.

In truth, they cause hormonal imbalance (a huge problem to solve), adding of weight and loss of sexual appetite. Some women become fat in some cases because of the chemicals they contain. Increase in stomach size, disappearance of menses have also been reported and many people regret ever trying them. This is why we always promote the natural methods.

Natural Family Planning Method.
