So really, what’s the fuss about breast feeding anyways? Well, in our opinion, breast feeding a baby is so important. If it wasn’t, nature would not have put it in place. That there are some people who didn’t benefit from their mother’s milk as they should have and still made it through, it doesn’t make it less important. Here are some reasons why breastfeeding is important.

  1. Breastfeeding gives children a healthy start in life. Our research shows that breastfed babies tend to cry less often and tend to fall sick less than those who are not breastfed. A baby who has ready access to breast milk would not know hunger. Let a baby cry for discomfort or for attention, but not for hunger.
  1. Breastfeeding has a calming effect on babies. There is a concept called comfort nursing, where a baby’s mouth rests on the breast but she is not actually drinking, only calming and soothing herself. This creates a sense of security and a sense of belonging for the baby. This is so important for an all-round development in these early days, weeks and months.
  1. Breastfeeding saves money for the parents and caregivers. Where they may not be enough money to feed an extra mouth, breastfeeding bridges this gap. The importance of this may not be felt in the first few months but once baby starts to eat more and more, you would realize how much saving breastfeeding is offering especially if you are combining other meals with nursing.
  1. Breast milk contains all necessary nutrients essential for development in the early years. While breast milk may be 80% water, the remaining 20% are a mixture of nutrients and minerals which babies and infants require to be fortified at this point in their lives and more importantly, it contains them in the exact quantity which fits their age and needs.
  1. Breastfeeding helps mother and child establish the “Mothersbond” which really is so important. Our brand is known as Mothersbond because we respect and cherish this process. Breastfed babies bond more with their mom easily than those who aren’t breastfed. Although breastfeeding and nursing times are not the only time mom and baby bonds, it is one of the most important. So if your baby is seemingly distant from you, try to breastfeed more. Or take charge of the feeding, even if using a bottle feeder.
  1. Breastfeeding connects mom and baby. It is a continuation of the umbilical cord feeding channel. After birth, that feeding process continues even before baby opens her eyes to see the world. It would be a lovely experience if baby opens her eyes every now and then and sees the same person tending to her.

Even if you would love to breastfeed but you cannot do so all the time, perhaps as a result of a difficult schedule, there are ways to make sure your baby gets the full nutrition of your milk. Breastfeeding is the secret to most well-fed and healthy babies and breast pumps are an indispensable tool towards achieving this.

How Can We Avoid Saggy Breasts When Breastfeeding, Are Breast Pumps Safe and How Long Should a Mother Breastfeed?

We have gotten so many questions on these three matters; let’s now take steps to address them.

On Saggy Breasts: The secret to prevent saggy breasts when you are breastfeeding is by not forgetting your bra during this period. You see, it is always simple to just let go. Every woman who is breastfeeding an infant knows that the baby would need to suck every now and then. So the temptation is there to just let go. And that is where saggy breast starts. So to avoid this, never forget your bra even during this period. And a good nursing bra would help you hold your breast, shape your breast and still provide easy access for baby to suck. That’s three things in one. This is why some women even when breastfeeding, their breasts are full and still round, not sagging and not falling, even their husbands won’t want to leave them.

On Breast Pumps: Breast pumps are tools used by mothers to extract their milk and feed baby with either immediately or afterwards. To say the truth, it is almost impossible to breastfeed your baby exclusively for 6-9months if you do not have one especially if you are a career person or a business woman. Breast pumps pose no harm to mother and baby in anyway. If they did, the repeated research into the subject would have proven so. Unfortunately, there is so much misinformation out there such as they make a mom loose her milk supply. Sadly, we hear this only in third world countries. On the contrary, breast pumps help to improve milk supply because the more you pump, the more you produce milk.

We have said repeatedly that if there is a single proven evidence that breast pumps does this; we would burn our entire consignment of breast pumps and upload a video on the internet. We love babies and we love mothers and we are always putting out materials and products to support them. We would never put them in harm’s way and encourage them to spend money on such. A breast pump goes a long way to help you achieve your goals of breastfeeding.  All the misinformation around breast pumps, polio vaccinations etc. are predominantly in developing countries and need to be reversed. Allow your baby to be immunized please…sorry for the slight digression.

On the issue of how long to breastfeed: To properly understand this, we need to know that breastfeeding is mainly in two types. Exclusive and non-exclusive breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding (known locally as baby friendly) is when you feed your baby on nothing but breast milk, not even water. Non-exclusive breastfeeding is when you feed on breast milk and other liquid, semi-solid and solid food as well as water.

A woman is free to breastfeed her baby for as long as she wants. Provided that she is willing and comfortable with it and her baby is comfortably enjoying it too. Women, especially first time moms are under so much pressure from husbands, friends, their moms and even mother in-laws on how long they should breastfeed.

It is recommended that you breastfeed exclusively for around six months, give or take  1 or 2 months more or less. So you can exclusively breastfeed for 5 months or 7 months. For non-exclusive breastfeeding, you can continue breastfeeding and giving other food for another 6-9 months. So adding this, your baby should be about a year or a year 5 months or slightly older when you stop breastfeeding altogether. If you continue to exclusively breastfeed for one year, well, you may think you are helping your baby but the baby’s needs are rapidly changing every day. A very active baby would be using energy and that energy comes mainly from food. Your milk (ALONE) may no longer be sufficient. On the other hand, if you continue non-exclusive breastfeeding for up to two years, your effort may not be yielding much because again. Your baby’s needs may have changed and as you keep breastfeeding, what you are doing would be similar to keeping a 15 year old child in a nursery class all in the name of giving a good start. This is because your child has matured and no longer really need your milk at this point.

At age six months, most children are ready to try other foods in combination with breast milk. Before six months, stay exclusive. The reason is not too far. At less than six months, baby is still young and tender and so extreme caution needs to be taken on what baby eats. It has to be safe, clean and very nutritious and we need to be sure of the source. This is why breast milk is the only trusted item at this point. Milk coming from the body of a healthy woman meets this criteria. It doesn’t mean that other milk cannot be used if you source properly. But if the mom is available and able to breastfeed, then it is the best option.

We have a very comprehensive material on how to wean a baby. We also have one on how to store breast milk. If you need more information on any, you are welcome to go on and read them. You could learn a few things.

One really nice product we wouldn’t fail to talk about is the baby spoon feeder. It makes feeding your baby no more a chore.
This is the new replacement for the baby plate, plate cover and spoon because its all of them merged in one and even more. With a spoon feeder, you simply make your baby’s food and fill it into the feeder and seal it, then place in your bag. When its meal time, you bring it out open the spoon tip and feed your baby. Once done, you cover up the spoon tip and put back in your bag or drop it on the table if home. This saves you the headache of bringing out a plate and the cover, a spoon and the baby food and start mixing because you already mixed at home. You only need to shake thoroughly. And feed your baby with it. No mess, no stress. Just feed your baby and get on with other things.
Costs N2590 (excluding shipping costs) and has been selling like wild fire.
Available in pink, blue and white color options. Please click here for more details,
